At a certain point in my poetry growth I wanted to do something different. I wanted to learn to play the guitar to sing poems, not songs. So if I wanted to do a "cover," I might put a Wordsworth poem to music, and sing it. Like a folk singer, but a poet: a folk poet. This is both more and less complicated than it sounds, depending on your point of view.
because of Antler. Who is Antler? Antler is one of the greats, our very own Whitman alive today: www.antlerpoet.net. Antler has been published in hundreds of magazines, journals, newspapers, periodicals as we used to call them, anthologies, collections, etc. Hundreds. But only three books of his have been published so far. This is a bummer. This is like Van Gogh not being recognized while he was alive. Shit. If I had the money.... Anyway, I figured if I couldn't write as brilliantly as Antler I should do something different with my own talent. Crazy? If you're friends with and a contemporary of Elvis Costello how do you get on the same stage? You'd better play something different. (By the way, there is no way I would ever, ever get anywhere near a stage with my own guitar if Elvis was around. How other artists perform next to geniuses is incredible, stupendable, and unbelievable, as Jackie might say.) |
